100 Secrets of Happy People - Review
Over the course of the past few years, I have been working on a book about positive thinking and happiness. It has a twist, and I hope that it comes across as being fun and hip, yet simplistically useful.
One of the things that I find so wonderful about Astrology is that life is how you perceive it to be. For instance, if you perceive an absent father, that's what you have. You might have other people in your home that were raised by the same parents who have an entirely different perception. Your chart shows absent father, theirs shows a close bond with dad. Regardless of why you have perceived it, the outlook is there. This concept in Astrology is what led me to write about positive thinking and happiness in the first place.
As part of my writing, I will pick up books and articles that I hope will inspire me, or delve into parts of happiness that I have not yet tackled. As part of that, I could not help but pick up a book at my local Hallmark store called The 100 Simple Secrets of Happy People - What Scientists Have Learned and How You Can Use It. It is written by a man who claims a Ph.D. My stab at happiness is light hearted and fun, but I always try to tie in scientific factoids. It seemed a perfect fit.
I should have been clued off to the fact that this book is sub par from the price tag. It was more than half off. Since I have found quite a few gems in those "bargain bins", I pushed on ahead. Each "blip" (you can hardly call them chapters) starts with a quote from a scientific paper. Then, the author explains what the paper says in normal speak.
Sadly, the good doctor only has about 5 themes, not 100. I will save you the read:
1. Believe in yourself
2. Have friends
3. Stay active
4. Laugh and have a sense of humor
5. Happiness is unrelated to age, but it is related to how you see life
These same themes repeat in the book over and over and over. 100 times, in fact.
I have to commend the author, though. Knowing this piece of garbage with a semi-smiley face (how original) on the cover was published gives me a lot of hope!!!
